2022 in review and 23 things to do in 2023

it feels like i say this every year, but SERIOUSLY: how is 2022 over already? i loathe the passage of time. anywho, it was a good year. a great year, even. it wasn't omg-best-year-of-my-life-all-my-dreams-came-true or anything, but you can't win 'em all. here are the highlights, and some to-dos for next year that will hopefully provide some inspo!

in 2022, i:

  • resumed my tradition of winter getaways with a trip to visit my friend alissa in st. petersburg, florida, where we ate, drank, went on a museum scavenger hunt, drank coffee at cute cafes, stalked adorable houses, watched inventing anna, bought a drink for a tiktok star we saw at a restaurant, and watched the super bowl halftime show at a bar

  • saw 40 artists/bands live (including 2 festivals, 16 acts i’ve seen before, and the long-awaited and twice-postponed def leppard/mötley crüe/poison/joan jett show at fenway)

  • met andrew mccarthy of brat pack fame at a travel show

  • started a substack newsletter, which will be returning in 2023; shameless plug to subscribe!

  • took my first dance class (hip-hop) since before COVID!

  • met my internet friend danielle IRL and had a fun-filled overnight trip in mystic, CT

  • drank frosé, people watched, and jumped around to ABBA at the tea dance in provincetown

  • enjoyed a completely idyllic weekend at a farmhouse in upstate new york with 6 other ladies for my best friend gleni's bachelorette extravaganza — we drank wine, made dinners and breakfasts and french press coffee, lounged in the pool, took edibles and sang karaoke under a blacklight, watched legally blonde, did nail art, had a coastal grandma photoshoot, and made s'mores by the fire pit

  • went to brooklyn for for gleni’s wedding, gave a toast, and danced the night away

  • dealt with the insanity that is salem, massachusetts on a saturday in october, but apple cider cocktails eased the pain

  • reunited with my marist friend tati in vegas for a whirlwind adventure that involved a distillery, high winds, meow wolf, magic mike, and a frantic but ultimately successful search for when we were young sunday tickets after the festival was canceled on saturday

  • did the stranger things thing as eddie munson with my friend cassidy (who was max) at the liberty hotel halloween party

  • got a new couch!

happiest moments:

  • sitting for hours at a wine bar in porto, portugal with my new tour friend nolene — looking at the douro river, eating cheese and sardines, drinking wine, and chatting
  • marveling at the natural beauty of the caves on the algarve coast on a boat tour
  • singing and dancing like a fool by myself at a machine gun kelly concert
  • seeing a man walking his pet pig at the hollis flea market
  • finding a random magic 8 ball on the sidewalk on my way to get a scone and sourdough and iced coffee on a summer sunday morning
  • drinking painkillers at the treehouse bar + watching youtube videos with danielle in our b&b room in mystic
  • floating in a random suburban pool cassidy and i rented through swimply
  • walking 45 minutes to honeycomb creamery in cambridge and ordering a scoop of port cherry vanilla ice cream and a scoop of salted caramel crackle and walking home
  • screaming "pour some sugar on me" with thousands of other people at the stadium tour
  • singing karaoke for hours, watching family feud, and then sleeping in a magical canopy bed during the bachelorette weekend
  • listening to "away from the mire" by billy strings several times on my solo road trip and tearing up every time
  • seeing my best friend get married and dancing to the best wedding playlist!
  • smoking a joint in my bathtub and listening to d'angelo on a random tuesday night
  • reliving my emo glory days and catching up with tati

note that these did not necessarily come out this year (though some did), i just consumed them in 2022.

22 things to do in 2022 (and 2021 in review)

well, 2021 was...a year. some wonderful and exciting things did indeed happen, and i knocked off nearly half of the items on last year's to-do list (including: book an international trip, make a new friend, go to a concert, see a movie in a movie theater, dine in a restaurant, and renew my passport) but i know i'm not really alone in feeling like it was essentially a slightly less shitty 2020. right? i'm not going to say too much about this coming year, lest i jinx it, but i did take a look back at the last 12 months and come up with some hopefully-achievable things for 2022. let's go!

things i did in 2021:

- had my first book published (and had my first book signing!)

- finally wrote a humor essay about my high school senior trip, one of the most traumatic experiences of my life (one of the like, two things i wrote this year, period)

- went to the berkshires for the first time...and the second time

- went to the brimfield antiques show for the first time

- saw 14 bands/artists live

- rented a stranger's pool for an afternoon with my friend

- roasted a whole fish

- took day trips to newport RI, portland ME, and salem MA

- made banana pudding from scratch

- went to king richard's faire for the second time

- went to pickety place, where little red riding hood was illustrated

- went to new york city for the first time in 2 years (and got all dolled up for the harry styles harryween show at madison square garden with my best friend)

- procured a guitar and am currently working on mastering A and D chords :)

22 things to do in 2022:

1. visit portugal

2. meet a band i like

3. sing karaoke

4. visit a friend in a different state

5. host a celebratory dinner party (carried over from last year)

6. take a road trip

7. learn to play 5 songs on guitar

8. make croissants

9. find one of the records on my vinyl wishlist out in the wild and buy it (the list includes MC5, the stooges, and crosby, stills, and nash)

10. take one day off work for no reason other than to relax and recharge

11. see a live play/musical

12. finish the new york times crossword every day for a week

13. stay at the maker hotel

14. go roller skating (preferably at chez vous)

15. get published on the new yorker's daily shouts

16. take a tennis lesson

17. order a cocktail that involves fire

18. start writing my second book

19. hang out on someone's boat

20. go to a tacky, old-school carnival

21. reach out to my high school best friend, whom i haven't talked to in 9 years

100 things to do in 2012: month (and year) in review

i figured that since i'm housebound with a cold, i better just churn out this post before it's 2014. with the items i crossed off last month, i hit the 40 mark on the list (just 1.5 less than last year's - weird!) with a bunch of "almosts" - i.e., i have almost memorized the busta rhymes verse but wasn't quite confident enough to youtube it, and i have a 3.96 GPA instead of a 4.0. hopefully paring down my list to 50 this year will give me a better chance of accomplishing most of my items! here's a look at what i did in december:

28. send christmas cards: COMPLETED.

they were ecards, buuuuut it's fine. right?

52. wear red lipstick: COMPLETED.

i stopped by the lancome counter for this one on the afternoon of new year's eve, pretending that i was going to some fancy party instead of dick clark-ing it (ryan seacrest-ing it, rather), and trying on a shade called "retro rouge." i felt kind of like a clown and wanted to take it off, but my dear mom informed me that it made me look like i "stepped out of a fashion magazine" and convinced me to wear it for the rest of the day. "you're getting so many looks!" she said. um, probably because i looked like a clown?!

73.  try on clothes i can't afford: COMPLETED.

i went into nieman marcus and i'm sure the fabulously flamboyant male employee had my number (it's 21...forever 21) from the moment i strolled in and picked up a $300 rhinestoned alice & olivia top and $200 jeans to try on. I'M ALLOWED! and they did look cute, right?! i still felt slightly bad just
flouncing out without anything, but meh.

91. buy a scratch ticket: COMPLETED.

every year, my uncle buys all of his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren a shit-ton of scratch tickets. and on average, i win like $0. sometimes $2. but i went of my own volition to the machine at my family's local grocery store in NH and picked out a glitzy $2 one called "holiday gold" and promptly won $20. show me da gold!

99. play a dance game on wii: COMPLETED.

it was xbox, but semantics. i am the undefeated champion of "just dance" in my aunt & uncle's household.

OTHER PICTURES FROM BREAK:

my parents' living room, full of holiday cheer

one direction cardboard cut-outs in newbury comics....so lifelike!

providence, RI on the way home from visiting family

NH in a photo at lull farm

don't even ask

winter wonderland!

wine tasting at labelle winery (so good)

my uncle's birthday celebration in NY - he made us all kir royales

fondue fun with some lovely ladies!

100 things to do in 2011: month (and year) in review!

ok, so i made my list for 2012, but i couldn't let the year pass without figuring out just how many things i actually accomplished in 2011. in december alone, i:
