you know, aside from "old town road."
1. this new album by the drums, brutalism
more than any other musical element, a great, infectious melody can completely make a song for me. and the latest record from jonathan pierce aka the only remaining member of the drums is chock-full of 'em. its dreamy, surf-y vibe is totally perfect for spring. apparently, many longtime fans don't like the new sound...which, of course, means i do. :) my favorite tune so far is the breezy "626 bedford avenue."
2. this movie, the boy band con
as a bona fide "old millennial," the boy band craze was an integral, amazing, wonderful part of my life from ages 11 through 32. i mean, uh, 16. i loved backstreet (nick!), 'n sync (ehh, JC i guess), o-town (dan!), LFO (brad?)—basically everyone except 98 degrees because they were too vanilla for my edgier pop palate and by that i mean they had zero songs with bizarre, heavy-handed sexual innuendo. lame!
i digress. i obviously had to watch the tell-all about the man behind it all: the late, disgraced, ponzi-scheming mogul lou pearlman, so i signed up for a youtube premium trial and canceled it immediately after viewing. honestly, i can pinpoint the moment back in high school when my friend molly and i knew he was creepy as fuck: during a scene early on in making the band when he said "papa's here to protect." shudder. we started saying it apropos of nothing because we thought it was as funny as it was gross, but...ugh.
there wasn't much it revealed that i didn't know before, but the nostalgia of the TRL clips, ashley parker angel's surprisingly insightful commentary, and aaron carter looking ROUGH while defending lou made it worth watching, especially if you're a woman of my certain age.
3. this clothing company, stoned immaculate
okay, so this brand showed up in my instagram feed as a #sponsored post and i felt personally blessed and attacked at the same time. blessed because every single item of clothing is extreeeeemely my shit. their tagline is "vintage inspired woman’s clothing for the dazed & confused," for god's sake! attacked because big brother is clearly watching and because every single item of clothing is at least $100. blaaaah.
4. this now-defunct podcast, mystery show
the great poet lil uzi vert once said, "all my friends are dead." well, all my podcasts are dead. it never fails that my favorites always get canned after a short while (FOUND, why oh why) or, by the time i discover them, they're long gone. such is the case with this one, which came recommended by my friend sarah last week. i dug into the first episode on monday and binged all six by wednesday.
the premise is simple: host starlee kine solves kinda quirky human interest mysteries (i.e. a writer whose obscure book only sold 1,000 copies total sees a paparazzi picture of britney spears holding the book and confusion/intrigue ensues).
my favorite episode, however, was about this badass belt buckle a child found in the street—pictured above. yes, that's a toaster, and a frying pan with eggs, and the name "HANS JORDI." but who's hans jordi, and what was the deal with this belt buckle? you gotta listen to find out, folks. probably the most entertaining podcast episode i've listened to since the reply all "long distance" one. and really, all of the episodes are incredible.
5. this new chocolate-cherry cold brew from dunkin' donuts
i've explained before that i'm one of those weirdos that always tries new food and beverages born out of desperation for product innovation at corporate headquarters. they're almost always short-lived, being discontinued mere weeks or months after they arrive. so i've learned to act fast.
my latest foray is the chocolate-cherry cold brew from dunkin' DONUTS (i will never stop adding the donuts and nobody will stop me). it's basically just cold brew with some sort of "natural" syrup in it, but it is delicious, and the fact that i can drink it black is absolutely huge. now, i wouldn't say it necessarily tastes a ton like chocolate or cherries...it's subtle. refined, even. jk, that's a stretch.

who wore it first?
if you know me at all, you know that i love me some vintage clothing. not only do i love the whole process of finding gems among racks of riff-raff and the concept of clothing as a travel souvenir, but the fact that every piece had a life (or two or three lives) before i found it is endlessly fascinating to me. i love speculating about the previous owner(s) of each piece , though i've never documented these speculations. until now, that is!
1. this ridiculous "don't worry, be happy" tee
where i got it: the fremont sunday market in seattle--a huge, weekly bazaar of all sorts of secondhand treasures
who wore it first: a cheerful nine year-old tomboy named scout. she begged her mom for it on a 1992 family vacation to key west.
2. this crazy, colorful 1960s coat
where i got it: the SoWa vintage market in boston's south end
who wore it first: a sassy, streetwise twenty-something boston department store employee named pamela.
3. this badass harley davidson vest
where i got it: to be honest, i've had this one for 10 years so i'm not completely certain. but definitely either the salvation army in nashua, nh or the goodwill in poughkeepsie, ny.
who wore it first: a san mateo biker babe named joan who wore it on her solo, post-divorce, soul-searching ride across the country. obviously.
4. this retro dress
where i got it: 40 south vintage in my 'hood, jamaica plain
who wore it first: a vapid, adulterous secretary named vicki, who leaves a trail of broken boss' hearts wherever she goes.
5. this sunny sweater
where i got it: raspberry beret in porter square, cambridge
who wore it first: an manic pixie dream girl/art school freshman that paired it with flowing skirts and wore it to sketch in the park.
6. this dope day dress
where i got it: the now-shuttered odd showroom in portsmouth, nh, an awesome boutique owned by one of elliott smith's ex-girlfriends (who's basically the coolest person ever).
who wore it first: a demure elementary school teacher named susan--she wore it with a white cardigan and pantyhose, of course!
7. this rock 'n roll vest
where i got it: raspberry beret in porter square, cambridge (again)
who wore it first: a scrappy '90s music PR assistant in manhattan named nicole. as a bonus, she could also wear it after work to schmooze with A&R reps at shows.
8. this PNW-obsessed top
where i got it: animal traffic in portland, oregon
who wore it first: a sorta-crunchy portland native named zoe. her boyfriend oliver bought it for her earnestly as a 17th birthday gift.
9. this euro blouse
where i got it: a really cool shop in amsterdam that i'll never be able to remember the name of because it's probably dutch
who wore it first: an ambitious real estate agent named mila who has a side hustle selling handmade scarves and mittens on etsy.

5 things i love right now
1. the new caffรจ nero in my neighborhood
just what i needed: another coffee shop to feed my addiction. but i'm a sucker for any cafe with bookcases, fireplaces, or comfy chairs, and this one has ALL THREE. plus, amazing cold brew. i won't disclose how many times i've been there in the past two weeks, but let's just say that i'm almost through a punch card. :| still forever loyal to kickstand, though.
2. this hip-hop group, flatbush zombies
this past weekend at boston calling, i was reminded of an underrated, great part of festivals: actually discovering new artists. while waiting for piebald to start, my friends and i caught the second half of flatbush zombies. from the name, i expected them to be a lo-fi indie band or something. i was immediately hooked -- not only by their dark, aggressive, drugged-out rap, but also their out-of-control energy, intriguing aesthetic (one of them was wearing an iron maiden shirt??), and hilarious stage banter, which included references to seinfeld and good-natured jabs at the crowd. the deal was sealed for me when they brought up a random fan to rap along with them for their last song. he killed it, flying around the stage, filling in the verses at all the right parts, and holding his phone over his head to document it all on social media, of course. it was just a fantastic festival moment and so much fun to watch. and now i can't stop listening to this one song in particular, "trade-off." bump it.
3. this instagram banana artist
peels and skeeeeels.
4. this donald trump impersonator on america's got talent
america's got talent is the perfect summer guilty pleasure and i have absolutely no shame in admitting that i watch it because it adds a significant amount of joy to my life. on that note, i may have been in a weird mood when i saw this one, but i honestly can't remember ever laughing so hard at an audition even though it's incredibly stupid. apparently bruno mars songs + fake trump = comedy gold?
5. this smoky sweatshirt

5 things i love right now
1. this song by catfish & the bottlemen, "26"
saw these guys live last weekend, and they put on a really high-energy, tight show. couldn't understand a word of the lead singer's stage banter due to his thick welsh accent, but that was my problem and he was cute as a button, so it was fine. i love that all of their songs have super catchy melodies, but still have that raw power and a bit of an edge to them. halfway through the first verse of this tune from their forthcoming album, i had one of those "I LOVE THIS SONG" concert moments and immediately went to find it when i got home. LOL at the artwork, tho.
2. ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK ON YOUTUBE
'nuff said. my favorite episode is "the tale of the whispering walls." still scares the crap out of me. what's yours?
3. goldenrod cardigans

3. goldenrod cardigans
in late august, i had a dream that it was fall and i was wearing a cardigan much like this one. when i woke up, i realized that i didn't own one and was deeply unhappy. i'm pleased to say that i purchased one the following week and have been wearing the hell out of it ever since. throw on a scarf with one of these babies and it does NOT get more autumn, unless you have a candy apple in your hand. which i highly recommend as well.
4. rediscovering rock of ages
did you hear about the guy that saw the musical rock of ages 500 times? first, i was confused as to why it was even a news item, since i feel like there are muuuuch stranger things that people have done 500 times. second, i was reminded of the first time i saw the glorious show (it's ok, i've only seen it twice) and promptly went on a youtube binge. keep in mind that i detest most musicals -- at least, the showtune-y ones -- so a song-and-dance show full of hair band covers and crude humor promptly shattered all stereotypes for me. i will never, EVER see the god-awful-looking movie with tom cruise. but if this number doesn't make you wanna, um, rock/quit your job and audition for a broadway musical, i'll be damned.
simultaneously beautiful and soooooooo cute!

my spring fashion wishlist
every year, around early march, i tend to get overzealous when it comes to spring shopping. i go on a quest to buy ALL THE COLORS and it usually results in me wearing things that are bright pink or yellow or teal when there's still a foot of snow on the ground. i've been a little better this year, and have (mostly) reserved my excitement for my pinterest boards. here are some things i'd love to rock if money weren't an issue and/or it were a lil' warmer and sunnier out.
floral turtleneck crop top (forever 21)
i'm pretty happy the crop top is making a comeback. i already bought this '90s-lovin' one, but you can never have too many.
camp director tote (modcloth)
i don't know about "camp director," but i feel like this tote would be perfect to take with you on a cross-country train trip filled with strange places and exciting strangers. and stuff.
"gumdrop gems" necklace (kate spade new york)
the best thing about this is that i am pretty sure i owned a similar necklace at age 5.
pop boutique playsuit (ASOS)
i always called them rompers, but ASOS calls them "playsuits." how friggin' fun are playsuits?!
lydia cutout loafers (anthropologie)
classy but quirky. i dig.
what's on your must-have list for spring?
